White Bass

When the bass are biting and your in the middle of it, there is so much excitement that you just can't contain yourself, especially when one grabs your bait and now you have one fighting on the end of your line. Wow, what a feeling! Doesn't matter what the fish is; largemouth bass, a smallmouth bass, a striped bass, or a white bass.

But, if you prefer to fish for the smaller white bass than the larger and feistier largemouth bass, you won't have all that much competition because most fishermen prefer the largemouth bass as a sport fish.

And most newbies to the sport of bass fishing also prefer the largemouth bass because it is a more voracious eater and will bite at anything and everything making it easier to catch, whereas the white bass is more elusive and harder to catch.

But, if you are more interested in the white bass, then learn all you can about them and their habits and habitats before you go after them. You are in luck because there are plenty of good fishing spots for white bass. They are found in shallower lakes and streams and prefer clear water over the murky or brackish ones and can be found in fresh flowing water.

Look for areas where there are lots of submerged root systems and aquatic plants, because these are areas that will trap oxygen and make it more readily available to the white bass and other fish to satisfy their need to breathe and utilize oxygen. It's areas like this that will allow you to find plenty of white bass.

They prefer shallower waters and don't go that deep to begin with, mostly waters that average about 30 ft. deep. Many white bass are active in the warmer waters of mid spring and they will remain in those warmer waters until the seasons change and the waters begin to cool down.

Don't think you are going to go home with a really big fish if you are white bass fishing, because they are on the smaller side of the coin, usually in the 1-2 pound range. They are relatively small in length averaging 10-14 inches.

After all is said and done, what does it matter whether you caught a white bass or a striped bass; all that matters is that you had a great time fishing away for white bass, the fish were biting, and you went home with some delicious morsels to grill or place in your frypan. What a day!
